Ear aches

Ear aches, burst eardrums, glue ear
These common childhood afflictions of the ears can be cured with the right approach, and do not need lead to long-term ear problems.
Most cases of glue ear (fluid trapped behind the eardrum) and discharging ears can be treated with medication alone: although to achieve this, a detailed knowledge of the underlying causes of ear problems needs to be know.
Helen Caulfield has a very good understanding of the role of nasal allergy and structural problems in the nose on ear problems and she can work out why your child is getting ear aches or ear infections, and how best to treat them.
Causes of glue ear/discharging ears/ ear infections:
- Nasal allergy
- Deviated nasal septum
- Sinusitis
- Large adenoids
Consequences of having glue ear:
- Speech delay
- Problems with balance
- Frequent temperatures needing antibioitcs
- Hole in the eardrum
During your appointment with Helen Caulfield she will clean your child’s ears in order to make an accurate diagnosis: this may involve performing microsuction: cleaning the ear with a fine suction tube using a microscope: both gentle and accurate.
Tests that can be done during the consultation:
- Hearing test
- Middle ear pressure test
